For almost 2,000 years, Britannia has captured the spirit of the nation she represents. She has evolved through time, reimagined by artists to reflect different strengths and characteristics of Britain. When sculptor Philip Nathan created his interpretation of Britannia for a new bullion coin in 1987, he chose elements such as the trident and olive branch to symbolise her maritime connections and peaceful spirit.
